GLP1s And Iteractions With Other Drugs

Research Effort On GLP-1 Drugs

As the popularity of GLP-1 drugs prescribed for weight loss and diabetes is growing, so is the research effort to gain further understanding in

  • how these drugs work,
  • what other uses they may have with other diseases,
  • long term effects of the drugs,
  • what interactions can be expected with other drugs.

GLP-1 Interation With Other Drugs

A recent report caught my eye, identifying GLP-1s for weight loss, and how they interact with other medications, published here in Medscape.

Here is a short run-down of some of the main points:

  • Oral contraceptives: GLP1/GIP demonstrated significant changes in oral contraceptive  levels.-
    • Managing contraception should be discussed with your GP/ HCP Prescriber
  • Levothyroxine Oral: GLP1  showed significant changes in levothyroxine levels.
    • Managing these levels should be discussed with your GP/ HCP Prescriber
  • Insulin and sulfonylureas: When these agents are used together with GLP-1 RAs, the risk for hypoglycemia increases, requiring dose reduction.
    • I manage metabolic bloods to track insulin levels and manage the dose accordingly.

Weight Loss Management Is A Core Function

Weight loss and metabolism is complex where all factors need to be regularly assessed and interpreted to acheive the best patient outcome.

We are working with weight loss patients every day and are always following the research for the latest information to apply to our patient care.

If patients have any concerns about GLP-1s and how they may be affecting other medications they are taking, please check in with us to assess the individual case.

Note From Dr Lockie

Medications will be assessed pre-operatively and post-operatively. With weight-loss and particularly after surgery, comorbidities can change for the better, particularly e.g., hypertension or diabetes. It is essential for your health that medications are discussed with you, your GP and/or any other specialists such as Cardiologist or Endocrinologist etc.

In addition, use of multivitamins, and alternative supplements should be discussed with the practice to promote your better health.
