Dr Lockie Reviews Recent Research
One of the areas of interest in obesity management has been the relationship between weight and obesity-related cancers. Up to 40% of cancer diagnoses can be related to obesity.
A recent study from Israel looked at 6,000 adults. They either underwent bariatric surgery or took a GLP-1 drug, such as semaglutide. Both groups demonstrated a significant reduction in cancer risk of between 30 to 40%.
Both bariatric surgery and the medications are thought to reduce cancer risk by reducing the amount of inflammation in the body.
A potential area of interest in research is using the new GLP-1 medications as part of cancer therapy to see if they improve survival. This will be an exciting area of research going forward.
The study was published in The Lancet’s eClinicalMedicine on 11/05/2025. Read the full study here.
