I though I would share case of a former bariatric patient who had regained weight after surgery.
In this particular case bariatric surgery was peformed in 2013 but had since regained 15 Kg.
I do see patients who have had some weight regain. When we do, we discuss and assess their metabolism in detail.
My systematic approach which is full of fact finding questions, assesses their condition and plans the next steps.
What Are The Issues
This month my lovely patient had had some issues resulting in medications which relaxed the throat muscles.
On assessment, the patient had low ferritin ( in Iron study blood series), and moderate obstructive sleep apnoea.
My assessment is multifactorial as every patient is different.
What Is The Treatment
- Iron infusion
- Appropriate CPAP
- Medication check
- Medical weight loss dose assessment and follow up plan.

Our Guiding Principles
The dosing regime for medical weight loss medication is tailored to their needs and NOT increased unless appropriate, and discussed in full with the patient.
My method always includes the exit plan when weight loss has occurred, and the patient is metabolically stable and satisfied with their results.
From a health care professional's point of view, I appreciate:
- Patient attendance
- Engagement in the process
- Honesty
- Full discussion
I am grateful that my patient data base is full of patients who fully participate, just like this patient.
