Michelle Van Vuuren

Dr Michele Janse van Vuuren is a Clinical Psychologist and Educational & Developmental Psychologist with over 18 years of specialist private practice experience in bariatric and eating disorder care. Her work is grounded in an interdisciplinary model, integrating psychological expertise within medical and surgical care pathway's in Dr Phil Lockie's Practice. 

She specialises in

  • bariatric psychology,
  • eating disorders,
  • the psychological complexities associated with
    • weight,
    • body image,
    • and medical care.

She supports individuals preparing for or adjusting to bariatric surgery, navigating complex relationships with food, and maintaining long-term behavioural change.

Qualifications and Practice

Holding a Master's degree and PhD in psychology, her doctoral research focused on psychosocial factors in bariatric surgery.  Her practice is evidence-based and delivered in close collaboration with the team to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.

She integrates Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and compassion-focused approaches within a formulation-driven framework. Her work is characterised by clinical precision, thoughtful strategy, and a focus on sustainable psychological and behavioural outcomes.

In addition to clinical practice, she provides supervision to psychologists and contributes to professional education in bariatric and eating disorder care.

She works alongside individuals with care and clarity, supporting meaningful change that feels sustainable, steady and aligned with their values.
