Robotic Assisted Surgery

 Review: Latest Robotic Surgical Techniques*

Dr Lockie is always trying to improve and update his surgical skills to provide his patients with the very best possible care. Around the world, new techniques and new technology are being researched to improve outcomes for patients.

With this in mind, Dr Lockie decided as far back as 2018 that robotic techniques would be beneficial to some bariatric and hernia patients.

Becoming A Robotic Surgeon

SInce then he and Shirley Lockie have undertaken extensive training, attended conferences and discussed robotic techniques with some of the world's leading robotic surgeons.

Soon Dr lockie will be recording his own robotic videos to help inform and educate his patients but in the meantime, these videos will help patients understand what it takes to become a robotic surgeon and what it means for patients.

Robotic Technologies and Systems

Robotic surgical systems use 3-D cameras and highly precise, remotely activated instruments, operated by the surgeon at a special console placed adjacent to the operating table and patient.

Typically, small incisions are made for the operating instruments and cameras, and the procedure takes place in a similar way to a laparoscopic procedure.

Being an evidence based surgeon, Dr Lockie will only recommend using robotic techniques where benefits can be expected by operating robotically.

Davinci RAS

The Davinci system was first approved for general use over 25 years ago and has gained broad acceptance across the world. Extensive research has been undertaken in that time to assess the safety and effectiveness of robotic assisted surgery (RAS) in many types of operations.

This evidence provides Dr Lockie with the information needed to recommend RAS or not.

RAS is commonly used in Bariatric and Hernia surgery, Dr Lockie's specialties.

HUGO RAS

The HUGO system was approved for general use in 2021. Whilst a lot newer than Davinci, research so far suggests that outcomes are similar using either system.
